Salvatore Ferragamo Perfume Guide: Tuscan Creations and the Scent of Florence
From Hollywood's shoemaker to one of Italy's most collectible exclusive fragrance lines
What Is Salvatore Ferragamo Perfume?
Salvatore Ferragamo is an Italian luxury house founded in Florence in 1927 by the shoemaker Salvatore Ferragamo (1898–1960), famous for hand-built footwear for Hollywood stars — and, since 2001, for a fragrance business of its own. Ferragamo Parfums, the house's dedicated perfume division, releases scents under the Ferragamo name and the sub-lines Incanto, F by Ferragamo, Signorina, Uomo and Amo Ferragamo. Because the brand lives in Florence — one of the oldest artisan cities in Europe — its most ambitious fragrances have always been the ones that smell of Tuscany itself.
The house traces back further than most shoppers realise. Salvatore Ferragamo emigrated from southern Italy to the United States in 1914, worked in a Boston shoe factory, moved to Santa Barbara and opened the Hollywood Boot Shop in 1923, making shoes for Rudolph Valentino, Clara Bow, Joan Crawford, Mary Pickford and Gloria Swanson. He returned to Italy in 1927 to found the company, survived bankruptcy in 1933, perfected the cork wedge heel in 1936, and in 1947 created the “invisible” sandal with a transparent nylon upper — a design that won the Neiman Marcus Award, the “Oscar of fashion,” and made him the first footwear designer ever to receive it. After his death in 1960, his wife Wanda Ferragamo took over and expanded the house into scarves, leather goods, ready-to-wear and fragrance. The family still controls roughly 65% of the business.
Two branding details matter when you shop the secondary market. First, the house was listed on the Italian stock exchange in 2011 and remains family-controlled. Second, in 2022 the brand shortened its wordmark: a new Peter Saville logo dropped “Salvatore,” so newer bottles and boxes simply read FERRAGAMO, while vintage stock is printed Salvatore Ferragamo — Florence Italy. Both are authentic; the printing date tells you which era you are holding.
What Makes Tuscan Creations Different From Other Ferragamo Fragrances?
Tuscan Creations is Ferragamo's exclusive fragrance line: a collection of 100 ml eau de parfums, each named after a Tuscan place, symbol or tradition, and released in strictly limited distribution. It began in 2018, when Ferragamo merged its two earlier exclusive ranges — Tuscan Soul and Tuscan Scent — into a single family. Everything was reworked: the juices were strengthened from eau de toilette to eau de parfum, several scents were renamed, and the packaging was rebuilt around the house's Gancino clasp logo with a leather-wrapped cap — a nod to the brand's leather ateliers.
The first Tuscan Creations release counted eleven fragrances: Rinascimento, Convivio, Bianco di Carrara, Punta Ala, Calimala, Vendemmia, La Corte, Testa di Moro, Viola Essenziale, Terra Rossa and La Commedia, priced around €220 for 100 ml and sold through Ferragamo boutiques and a small number of high-end retailers. Gentil Suono followed in 2019. In 2022 the line was extended with three further scents — E Pur Si Muove, Arte Orafa and Orto Delle Spezie — released exclusively through Harrods at $245 per 100 ml bottle.
Because the line was never mass-distributed and editions were produced in small runs, Tuscan Creations has quietly become the most collected chapter of Ferragamo perfumery: a rare case of a mainstream designer house producing genuine “niche” juice in heavy, leather-capped bottles.
Top 5 Tuscan Creations Perfumes Every Collector Should Know
- Rinascimento (2018) — the scent that opened the line, composed by Alex Lee around the lily, the ancient symbol of Florence. Italian mandarin, basil and green pepper open onto lily, tuberose and iris butter over sandalwood, vetiver and Orcanox. It is the reference point for the whole collection.
- Punta Ala (2018) — Alberto Morillas's Mediterranean seaside portrait, named after the Tuscan coastal resort. Bergamot, lemon, mandarin and neroli bigarade lead into jasmine, Paradisone and olive leaves, resting on cedarwood, vetiver, patchouli and musk. A sunlit, salty-woody unisex eau de parfum. Available in the 100 ml Eau de Parfum.
- Gentil Suono (2019) — Serge Majoullier's tribute to opera and the opera houses of Florence. Mandarin, black pepper and geranium open over myrrh, plum and labdanum, with olibanum, bourbon vetiver and cedar underneath: the most “theatrical” and resinous entry in the line. Available in the 100 ml Eau de Parfum.
- Bianco di Carrara (2019) — Alexandra Carlin built this one from the idea of carved marble: Calabrian bergamot, white pepper and ambrette seeds over violet, iris and heliotrope, with amber, tonka bean and white suede at the base. If you like powdery iris perfumes, this is the one.
- La Corte (2018) — Fabrice Pellegrin's homage to the Medici court: Indian jasmine absolute, almond milk, freesia and white lily over Madagascar jasmine, white amber, cashmere wood and bourbon vanilla absolute. The softest, most opulent entry in the collection.
Two more entries deserve a collector's attention. Testa di Moro (2018) is the leather scent of the line — incense, pink pepper and dried fruits over leather, saffron and patchouli — and Vendemmia (2018) translates a Tuscan grape harvest into citrus, peach and fig over sandalwood and tonka bean.
How to Spot an Authentic Ferragamo Tuscan Creations Bottle
Ferragamo is one of the most counterfeited mid-price designer names, so learn the packaging before you buy. Every genuine Tuscan Creations 100 ml bottle follows the same code:
- The box is a rigid, glossy gold carton with an oval medallion at the top reading Salvatore Ferragamo — Florence, Italy in script. The script sits inside the medallion cut-out, not printed as a separate sticker.
- The front panel prints the collection and the scent name in spaced capitals — TUSCAN CREATIONS above the scent — followed by the volume and concentration, e.g. “e 100 ml EAU DE PARFUM 3.4 FL. OZ.” There is no 30 ml, 50 ml or travel size in the original exclusive run, so any small Tuscan Creations bottle you see is a decant or a different line.
- The back panel carries the ingredient list, a Ref. number and a barcode. On the Punta Ala bottle in our own stock the label reads PUNTA ALA — EAU DE PARFUM, e 100 ml 79% Vol. 3.4 FL. OZ., Ref. 58502, barcode 8 052086 375178.
- The bottle is heavy, thick-walled glass with the scent's own juice colour (green for Rinascimento, ocean tones for Punta Ala, amber for La Corte) and a cap wrapped in leather. The Gancino motif appears on the packaging, never as a glued-on plastic charm.
- Retail and importer stickers — Japanese, Chinese, EU or duty-free over-labels — are normal on grey-market and travel-retail bottles and are not a sign of a fake. Judge the bottle by its printed Italian text and bottle weight, not by the sticker.
- The discontinued names to know: when the line was rebuilt in 2018, the old Tuscan Soul scents Golden Acacia and White Mimosa were dropped, while Leather Rose became Calimala and Incense Suede became Testa di Moro. Old bottles under the old names are genuinely rarer than the 2018 relaunch.
Frequently Asked Questions About Salvatore Ferragamo Perfume
Is Tuscan Creations discontinued?
The line is not formally discontinued, but it has never been mass-distributed: Ferragamo sold it through its own boutiques and a small group of luxury retailers, in limited runs. Several entries — including several of the original 2018 eleven — are now much easier to find on the secondary market than at retail, and the pre-2018 Tuscan Soul names are gone for good. That combination is what makes Tuscan Creations collectible.
Is Salvatore Ferragamo the same brand as Ferragamo?
Yes. In 2022 the house introduced a new wordmark by Peter Saville that dropped the founder's first name, so bottles produced after the rebrand are printed FERRAGAMO, while earlier boxes read Salvatore Ferragamo — Florence, Italy. The fragrance division has been in-house as Ferragamo Parfums since 2001, and both markings appear on genuine bottles.
Are Tuscan Creations perfumes for men or for women?
They are marketed as unisex. Ferragamo presents the collection — Rinascimento, Punta Ala, Gentil Suono, Bianco di Carrara and the rest — as fragrances for women and men, which is one reason collectors happily blind-buy them: the line is built on places, materials and ideas rather than on gender codes.
