What Is Mugler Perfume?
Mugler is the French couture and fragrance house founded by Thierry Mugler (1948–2022), the designer behind the most sculptural fashion of the 1980s and 90s. In perfume it is defined by two bottles: Angel (1992), which invented the modern gourmand with its praline, chocolate and patchouli accord, and Alien (2005), a jasmine-and-amber monolith still among the world's best-selling feminine scents. The house dropped "Thierry" from its name in 2017 and joined L'Oréal in 2020.
A Short History of the House
Thierry Mugler was born in Strasbourg in 1948 and founded his fashion house in 1974. In 1992 he partnered with Clarins on Angel, a gamble by perfumer Olivier Cresp that layered bergamot, cassis, honey, praline and patchouli into something edible, inside a refillable star flacon that became a design icon. Alien followed in 2005, composed by Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyère around jasmine sambac, cashmeran and white amber.
In 2014 the house launched Les Exceptions, a haute-parfumerie line in Art Deco faceted bottles; Mystic Aromatic joined in 2018. L'Oréal bought Mugler from Clarins in 2020, which makes the "Thierry Mugler"-era bottles of the 1990s–2010s the ones collectors chase. Thierry Mugler died in January 2022.

- Alien Eau de Toilette, 60 ml — $83 (code 140126-37). The 2009 flanker and the easiest Alien to wear: Moroccan jasmine, cashmeran, white amber at a lighter concentration (box: 60 mL, vaporisateur-spray).

How to Authenticate a Mugler Bottle
- Refill mechanism: genuine Alien and Angel flacons unscrew at the collar; a "refillable" bottle with no removable collar is fake.
- Read the box: concentration appears as "Eau de Parfum" or "Eau de Toilette vaporisateur-spray". Listings guess; the box never does.
- Find the batch code: five or six characters on the base or box flap — essential when a seller claims a 1990s "original Angel". Note that pre-2017 bottles read "Thierry Mugler" and later ones only "Mugler"; both are authentic.
