What Is L'Occitane en Provence Perfume?
L'Occitane en Provence is a French maison de beauté founded in 1976 in Manosque, Provence, by 23-year-old Olivier Baussan, who started out steam-distilling wild rosemary and lavender for market stalls. The name means "the woman from Occitania" — the southern French region that includes Grasse, the world capital of perfumery. The house marks its 50th anniversary in 2026, and its fragrances are still blended in France (Manosque, 04100).
Why Discontinued L'Occitane Scents Are So Collectible
Launched in May 2013, La Collection de Grasse was L'Occitane's most serious fragrance project: 75 ml eau de toilettes built on Grasse materials, opening with Jasmin & Bergamote, Magnolia & Mure, Vanille & Narcisse (by Karine Dubreuil-Sereni) and Thé Vert & Bigarade, growing to eight scents with Néroli & Orchidée and Mer & Mistral. Editions rotate fast: the honey line around Miel & Citron (2007) was discontinued entirely, Notre Flore and Voyage en Méditerranée were withdrawn, and several Grasse eau de toilettes were reformulated after 2013. How to Authenticate Vintage L'Occitane Perfume
- Read the base: genuine bottles show the volume ("75 ml – 2.5 fl.oz."), "L'OCCITANE – 04100 Manosque", "Made in France" and a recycling mark; concentration is moulded into the glass, not on a sticker.
- Japanese import labels are normal: L'Occitane Japan Co., Ltd. imported heavily, so bottles carry a Japanese back label with a dating code such as "15ET100VA5" (15 = year, ET = eau de toilette, 100 = ml).
- Ask for the name in glass. House-era flacons name the fragrance (NÉROLI & ORCHIDÉE, VANILLE & NARCISSE, MÉDITERRANÉE); if a listing gives an exotic name but the bottle is unmarked, request a base photo first.
- Testers are legitimate but must be disclosed: demonstration flacons carried "Not for sale" stickers and should be priced lower.

Is L'Occitane a niche perfume house?
No — it is a large French beauty house (founded 1976, sold in 90+ countries), but it builds on the same Provence materials as niche perfumery: Grasse rose and jasmine, verbena, lavender, immortelle. Mass distribution plus scarce discontinued editions is what makes older bottles collectible.
Are L'Occitane fragrances discontinued?
Many are: the honey-lemon line around Miel & Citron was discontinued in full, Notre Flore and Voyage en Méditerranée were withdrawn, and seasonal limited editions are never reissued.
