Mancera Perfume Guide: Cedrat Boise, Red Tobacco & the Paris Niche House of Pierre Montale

How one French perfumer built two cult houses — and why Mancera bottles are 120 ml of pure extrait-level intensity

What Is Mancera Perfume?

Mancera is a Paris-based niche perfume house launched in 2008 by French perfumer Pierre Montale, the nose who founded Montale in 2003 and helped bring oud and oriental compositions into Western niche perfumery. Mancera was conceived as a cross-generational project: Pierre contributes his experience with dense, oriental-inspired formulas, while his daughter Amélie Montale has shaped the house’s visual and creative direction as artistic director since 2017. The result is a house that smells unmistakably French in its polish and unmistakably Oriental in its materials.

Every Mancera fragrance is bottled in France as a 120 ml eau de parfum (a handful of later releases come in 60 ml), sold in the signature gold carton, and distributed worldwide under Interdevelopment Diffusion SA of Geneva. If a niche house has ever been accused of selling expensive water, Mancera is the counter-example: the juice is thick, loud and long-lasting, which is exactly why collectors who started with “designer” fragrance graduate to it.

Pierre Montale, the House Behind the House

Before Mancera there was Montale — founded in Paris in 2003 and famous for its aluminium flacons, its aoud line and its rose-oud combinations. That house made the Montale name a reference point for anyone shopping niche perfume. Mancera, founded five years later, was to be the more opulent, more contemporary sibling: same perfumer, same obsession with high-concentration formulas, but a cleaner, more architectural aesthetic — gold cartons, heavy glass, and 120 ml bottles rather than 50 ml.

Both houses share a material vocabulary that runs through the entire catalogue: oud, rose, tobacco, vanilla, saffron, citrus woods and white musk. Where Montale tends to lean on oud as the headline, Mancera lets the supporting cast breathe — fig, peach, green apple, coconut, tonka, coffee — before the resins and woods come through on the dry-down.

Top 7 Mancera Perfumes Every Collector Should Know

  1. Pearl (2016) — A fruity-floral built on bergamot, fig, green apple and white peach, with Bulgarian rose, violet and Egyptian jasmine in the heart and white musk and amber underneath. Part of the L’Or collection, and the most “polite” way into the house: floral-green, radiant and endlessly wearable, yet still unmistakably a Mancera in longevity.
  2. Cedrat Boise (2011) — The house signature. Lemon, blackcurrant and bergamot open over jasmine, leather, patchouli and sandalwood, finishing on cedar, vanilla, white musk and moss. A citrus-woody unisex fragrance that is routinely described as one of the best value-for-money niche scents ever bottled.
  3. Roses Vanille (2011) — Rose and vanilla in a sweet-floral accord with above-average longevity. This is the bottle people buy when they love both gourmand and floral and refuse to choose.
  4. Red Tobacco (2017) — The most-reviewed Mancera on the fragrance databases and its winter heavyweight: warm spice, dried fruit, tobacco, oud and vanilla. One or two sprays is genuinely enough.
  5. The Aoud line — Aoud Café (2013), Aoud Vanille (2015), Aoud Blue Notes (2015), Aoud Lemon Mint (2016) — Pierre Montale’s oud heritage translated into gourmand and fresh registers. The lemon-mint entry is the famous “oud you can wear in summer”.
  6. Instant Crush (2019) — Saffron, jasmine, amber and vanilla in a dense, resinous, skin-close glow; a modern flanker-style hit that became a house bestseller.
  7. French Riviera (2022), Tonka Cola (2022), Amore Caffè (2023) — The newer generation: sunnier, sweeter, more playful. Tonka Cola in particular became an instant community favourite and shows the house still has a commercial pulse.

Mancera’s Collections, Explained

Mancera releases do not sit in one undifferentiated catalogue. Knowing the collection name tells you what kind of bottle you are looking at:

Collection Character
L’Or “Gold” line — the most elegant, polished florals and fruity-florals. Pearl (2016) belongs here.
Les Confidentiels Quieter, more intimate compositions sold in smaller formats.
Les Exclusifs Limited, harder-to-find editions with denser concentrations.
Line Prestigium The ornate bottles — heavy decoration, statement strength.
Azure Garden / Rainbow / Wild / Xplicit Thematic series covering fresh, colourful, animalic and explicitly sensual territory respectively.

Vintage and discontinued bottles of Mancera circulate quickly, and sealed 120 ml bottles rarely stay in one place for long. We currently have one factory-sealed bottle of Pearl Eau de Parfum 120 ml in the original cellophane and gold carton — a 2016 fruity-floral from the L’Or collection, still in production, and one of the friendliest introductions to the house.

How to Authenticate a Mancera Bottle

Mancera is widely counterfeited, largely because the 120 ml format and the gold carton are easy to imitate from a distance. The box itself gives you most of the answers — check these points before you buy:

  • Read the back panel, not the front. An authentic carton prints MANCERA PARIS, the fragrance name and 120 ml 4 FL OZ alongside EAU DE PARFUM, VAPORISATEUR / NATURAL SPRAY and MADE IN FRANCE.
  • Distributor lines must be present: Interdevelopment Diffusion SA, 3 bis Rue du Parc, 1207 Genève, Suisse together with C Parfums Cosmetiques, 3 Avenue du Beauregard, 10400 Nogent-sur-Seine, and the site manceraparfums.com.
  • An EAN-13 barcode is printed on the carton in the 3760265… range. Counterfeit cartons frequently show no barcode at all, or an unreadable one.
  • The full ingredient declaration is listed — parfum/fragrance, alcohol denat., aqua/water, then allergens such as limonene, linalool, citronellol, geraniol, coumarin and eugenol. Fakes usually print a shortened list.
  • Gold carton, dense glass, heavy gold-toned sprayer. The 120 ml bottle should feel noticeably heavier than a designer EDP of the same size; the cellophane, where present, is factory-tight.
  • Spelling and spacing. French licensing text is the first thing counterfeiters get wrong — watch for missing accents, doubled words, or a carton that says “Eau de Parfum” on a bottle sold as an extrait.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mancera Perfume

Is Mancera a niche perfume house?

Yes. Mancera is a Paris niche house founded in 2008 by perfumer Pierre Montale, sold through selective retailers rather than mass-market channels, and priced above designer fragrance. Its 120 ml eau de parfum format and high oil concentration place it firmly in niche territory.

Is Mancera the same company as Montale?

They are sister houses created by the same perfumer, Pierre Montale. Montale was founded in Paris in 2003; Mancera followed in 2008 as a more opulent, more contemporary offshoot, with Amélie Montale joining as artistic director in 2017. Both are distributed internationally through the same Swiss distribution structure.

Is Mancera Pearl discontinued?

No. Pearl was launched in 2016 as part of the L’Or collection and remains in production. Because it is a niche release rather than a mass-market bestseller, bottles can be hard to find locally — which is why collectors buy sealed 120 ml bottles when they appear.

How long does Mancera perfume last?

Longer than most designer eau de parfums. Fragrance databases rate Mancera’s better-known releases above average for longevity, with Red Tobacco, Roses Vanille and the Aoud line regularly described as multi-hour, high-projection scents. One to three sprays is usually plenty.

Where can I buy authentic Mancera perfume?

Authorised retailers, specialist niche perfumeries, and reputable vintage sellers. Mancera cartons carry the note “this product can only be sold by authorised retailers” together with the Interdevelopment Diffusion SA and C Parfums Cosmetiques distribution lines — use those as your authenticity check. At TrendyGround we stock authentic Mancera bottles sourced from private collections, bottled in France and shipped worldwide from Hong Kong.
