How to Authenticate Vintage Clinique Perfume

• Check the base label. Genuine US-market bottles carry a gold or white base label reading CLINIQUE LABS. INC., DIST., NEW YORK, N.Y. 10022 — MADE IN U.S.A., usually with the volume in fluid ounces next to it. Crude, unauthorised stickers, misspelt distributor names or a missing country of origin are warnings.
• Learn Clinique's own volume language. Clinique labelled the small collectible bottles as perfume or perfume spray, not "parfum" — a 25 ml / 0.8 fl oz Clinique perfume spray is the classic department-store size, and the Wrappings box states .75 FL. OZ. PERFUME SPRAY directly on the carton. If a listing claims a Clinique "extrait de parfum" in a fanciful bottle, be sceptical.
• The flower-embossed Aromatics Elixir flacon is real — and rare. Clinique released special-edition Aromatics Elixir presentations in clear glass with an embossed flower motif and a gold cap; the word ELIXIR is moulded into the glass. These are period collector pieces, and some were filled outside the US. Because the moulding carries no printed brand name, the bottle must be judged together with its box and base label.
• Gift-with-purchase minis are not fakes. Aromatics Elixir was never marketed with a celebrity campaign; Clinique promoted it by slipping small bottles into gift-with-purchase bags, which is why huge numbers of genuine 7–15 ml minis exist. • Trust the smell, in order. Vintage Aromatics Elixir opens herbal and almost medicinal (chamomile, sage, coriander) before turning into mossy rose; Wrappings opens coniferous and aldehydic, then goes mossy, cedary and slightly leathery.
