How to read a batch code

Almost every modern fragrance batch code hides the production date in two parts: a digit that stands for the year, and a letter or digit that stands for the month. Which character holds which piece of information differs per house — that is why the same code gives a different year on different websites.

We use each house's own published or widely accepted scheme, show a confidence level, and flag the two cases where any decoder is guessing: codes that repeat every decade, and houses with no public scheme.

Why does another site show a different year?

Because 2- and 4-character codes repeat. A code like 5K01 exists for two different decades, and different tools pick a different base year. Treat a one-decade difference as a "same code, different era" case rather than an error in one tool.

Does a valid code prove authenticity?
